Purpose of the Role:

Reporting directly to the CFO this role is accountable for accounting operations, production of periodic financial reports, maintenance of an adequate system of accounting records, and a comprehensive set of controls and budgets designed to mitigate risk, enhance the accuracy of reported financial results, and ensure that reported results comply with generally accepted accounting principles or international financial reporting standards.

Assistant Controller Responsibilities:

  • Supervise the accounting team including performance reviews, training, and staff assignment
  • Review internal/external reporting and journal entries
  • Oversee the month end close process including the preparation and analysis of total company operating results, works closely with the business or other finance teams to collect data for month end close as required
  • Establish internal controls to ensure that accounting activities are in accordance with established policies
  • Assist and support the annual budget and quarterly forecast update process
  • Provide support and analysis related to working capital management especially in the area of Accounts Receivables and Accounts Payables
  • Complete monthly HST/GST returns and support the Controller in responses to Statistics Canada
  • Analyze internal controls/processes and identifies areas for follow-up and improvement
  • Prepare working papers related to account reconciliations
  • Research accounting technical requirements and present options for new/complex transactions
  • Drive process improvement initiatives and leads special projects as required
  • Strengthen financial acumen of business partners through education and provide financial guidance
  • Ensure that corporate strategy and subsequent decisions are in the best financial interest of the company
  • Process owner for Fixed asset management including count and asset tagging
  • Other duties/projects as assigned

Assistant Controller Skills and Qualifications:

  • A. in Accounting or Business Administration
  • Accounting Designation is an asset
  • 2 or more years of previous accounting experience
  • Solid knowledge of Accounting concepts and processes
  • Attention to detail is critical
  • Excellent computer skills ideally with Accpac and Microsoft Excel
  • Creative thinker, problem solver, and strong analytic ability
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to work on multiple tasks simultaneously
  • Collaborative; encourages cross-functional cooperation and builds strong working relationships between the finance and operating teams
  • Self-motivated
  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills
